According to research by several US historians and a Jamaican scholar, Mr Obama is actually the seventh black person to become president of the US.
US presidents Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge and Dwight Eisenhower all had black ancestry, according to recent articles published in several US newspapers and on the Internet website DiversityInc.
Abraham Lincoln, America’s 16th president, was nicknamed ‘Abraham Africanus’ and described as having dark skin and coarse hair by his political enemies.
His parents, according to an 1864 book, were both Native American or Melungeon.
Lincoln may have been a Melungeon, which is an ethnic group of colonial settlers who were on the East Coast and Florida _before_ the British. They seem to be a mix of Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Croatian, Sephardi Jew, and possible Native American, and when the British encountered them, they claimed to be Portuguese and spoke Elizabethan English. They also tend to have darker complexions that WASPs—and for a while, they were classified as “free people of color.”
The name itself appears to derive from the Turkish word for “lost soul.” As the British appropriated more and more of the coastline, the Melungeons were pushed further and further inland, eventually ending up in in the mountains in places like Tennessee and Kentucky, before going underground and “passing” as Anglo. So it is possible that even you who read this might be part Melungeon and not know it.
Abraham Lincoln was our 16th president from 1861 to 1865. President Lincoln’s presidential opponents made cartoon drawings depicting him as a Moor and nicknamed him “Abraham Africanus the First.” William Herndon, Lincoln’s law partner, said that Lincoln had very dark skin and coarse hair and that his mother was Melungeon. Lincoln’s law partner, William Herndon’s book entitled “The Hidden Lincoln” says that Thomas Lincoln could not have been Abraham Lincoln’s father because he was sterile from childhood mumps and was later castrated.
Abraham Lincoln was said to be the illegitimate son of a Negro by Nancy Hanks. In his campaign for the Presidency he was often referred to as a Negro by his opponents. He was even depicted as a Negro. He was called Abraham Africanus the First. (Also note there were other Black Presidents prior to Washington; there is also a “Black” President on the back of the $2 bill)
